A group of American Navy men are stationed in the South Pacific during WWII. Much to the mens’ delight, a group of American nurses are also stationed on their island. The head nurse is Nellie Forbush (Mitzi Gaynor) who falls in love with an older local planter, Emile de Becque (Rossano Brazzi). He wants to marry her, but she is repulsed by his bi-racial children from his marriage to a Polynesian woman. A U. S. Marine, Lt. Joe Cable (John Kerr) arrives on the island to take part in a secret mission. When resident con-man Seabee Luther Billis (Ray Walston) talks Lt. Cable into signing a boat out to make a trip to the mystical island of Bali Ha’i, Lt. Cable meets the daughter of Polynesian souvenir saleswoman Bloody Mary (Juanita Hall) and falls in love.
