Edward Malus (Nicholas Cage) receives a distressed letter from his ex-wife stating that their daughter is missing. The ex wife Willow (Kate Beahan), lives on an island called Summersisle. Edward manages to hitch a ride onto the island via airplane, and meets up with his ex-wife to try to solve the mystery of their daughter's disappearance. He discovers that the island is inhabited by a strange cult, to which his wife belongs. It is a matriarchal cult, and there are very few men. No one will talk to him regarding his missing daughter and are resentful of the questions that he asks them. The inhabitants of the island drop him clues as to his daughter's whereabouts, but each clue leads him nowhere. The closer he comes to finding out the truth, the more horrific his discoveries are. By the time he discovers the truth, it is too late....
