When nautical, deep-sea miners come in contact with a wrecked Soviet ship they bring back mysterious cargo to their underwater base. They soon discover that the cargo is not what it seems to be and is fact a horrible genetically mutating monster that hunts the miners down one by one. Led by Steven Beck (Peter Weller), the miners must unlock the mystery of the creature and destroy or escape it if they wish to survive their terrible predicament in the middle of the ocean where rescue is highly improbable. They must band together or one by one they will be brutally extinguished by Leviathan....

Plot holes: If the creature had the ability to generate a total creature from part of itself, isn't blowing it up insuring there will be several hundred of these same creatures growing in the ocean? (more)

Trivia:
Near the beginning of the movie, when Tony 'DeJesus' Rodero's oxygen is about to run out, the captain tries to do something with a computer on board. Between 3D animations and strange interferences on monitor, we see Luxo, Pixar's logo, with a ball, like in the first ever short film made by Pixar Luxo Jr. (1986). (more)
