The crew of the USS Enterprise have finally come home for some well deserved rest after many long years of voyaging through space. While Captain Kirk (William Shatner) and Spock (Leonard Nimoy) are vacationing in Yosemite they are called away on an urgent mission in the newly christened Enterprise. Their mission is to rescue some hostages on a distant barren planet, along the way they are followed by a Klingon intent on stopping them from completing their mission. When they discover that the hostage situation was a ruse by Sybok (Laurence Luckinbill), Spock's half-brother, to gain access to the Enterprise in order to cross the Great Barrier (or the Final Frontier). Sybok claims that a being calling itself Sha-Ka-Ree is on the other side of this long closed off and unexplored area of space. Plot holes: With only one shuttle craft on Nimbus III, and the transporters offline, there is no way that all of the insurgents could have gotten off the surface and onto the Enterprise as it warps away immediately. (more)
