Billy Bigelow (Gordon MacRae), a one-time carousel barker, died 15 years ago in a botched robbery attempt from which his no-good friend, Jigger Craigin (Cameron Mitchell) escaped. But Billy wants a chance to make amends. He tells his life story to the Starkeeper (Gene Lockhart) in an effort to be granted just one more day back on earth with the loved ones he left behind. As a young man, he’d fallen in love with and married local girl Julie Jordan (Shirley Jones). But she’d lost her factory job after breaking curfew to stay out with Billy, and he’d lost his when the carousel’s owner, Mrs. Mullin (Audrey Christie) became jealous over his love for Julie. When the young newlyweds learned Julie was pregnant, Billy, concerned about his ability to provide for his family, agreed to join Jigger in the robbery. Goofs: Anachronisms: As everyone leaves for the clambake in sailboats, we can see, for a full fifteen seconds or so, several men in one of the boats wearing very modern-looking caps and sunglasses.
