Harry Houdini (Guy Pearce) is saddened by the fact that he was not at his mother's side when she died. He is determined to find out by issuing a reward of ten thousand dollars for anyone who can help him determine his mother's last words by contacting her beyond the grave. When con artitst Mary McGarvie (Catherine Zeta-Jones), and her daughter Benji (Saoirse Ronan) find out about the reward they are determined to win it from him. There only obstacle to Houdini's confidences is Sugarman (Timothy Spall), who is Houdini's protective manager. Houdini is taken by the duo, but Sugarman is determined to intervene, each side taking every effort to win the day....
